# Fall Cleanup Tips for Belton and KC Yards

Fall in the Kansas City area moves fast. One week the trees are just turning, and the next your yard is buried in leaves and your beds are full of dead stems and weeds that went to seed. A little cleanup now makes spring a lot easier. Here's what we've seen work around Belton and the KC area.

## What to clean up in fall

**Leaves**

- **Get them off the grass.** A thick, wet layer of leaves left all winter can smother grass and leave bare, matted spots in spring.
- **Don't wait for the last leaf.** Two or three passes through the season is easier than one giant pile in December.
- **Clear patios, walkways, and steps.** Wet leaves get slick and stain concrete.
- **Check corners and fence lines.** Wind piles leaves up against fences, sheds, and the house.

**Beds**

- **Pull weeds before they go to seed.** Every weed you pull now is a few hundred you don't fight next year.
- **Cut back mushy or diseased plants.** Hostas, daylilies, and spent annuals turn to slime after a freeze.
- **Leave the good stuff standing.** Coneflowers, grasses, and seed heads feed birds and shelter helpful insects all winter.
- **Freshen the edges.** A clean edge makes a bed look cared for even when nothing is blooming.

**Around the house**

- **Pull debris away from the foundation.** Leaves and sticks against siding hold moisture and invite bugs.
- **Clear drains and low spots on the ground.** Keep water moving away from the house before winter.
- **Pick up fallen branches.** Easier now than after they're frozen into the ground.

## When to do it

**Late September to October:** Start weeding beds and pulling out annuals that are done. Do a first leaf pass once trees start dropping.

**Late October to November:** This is the big push. Most of the leaves are down. Cut back the soft, mushy plants and clear out leaf piles from beds, corners, and hardscape.

**December:** Do a final pass if late-dropping trees like oaks and pin oaks are still letting go. After that, mostly leave it alone until spring.

## Common mistakes we see

- **Letting leaves sit all winter on the grass.** It's the most common cause of matted, patchy spots in spring.
- **Cutting every plant to the ground.** Leave sturdy stems and grasses for winter interest and wildlife. Cut those back in spring.
- **Piling leaves against the house.** Move them out to the curb or a compost pile, not the foundation.
- **Skipping the weeding.** Fall weeds are spring's problem times ten.
- **Bagging everything at once.** A few smaller cleanups beat one exhausting weekend.
- **Forgetting about haul-off.** Big piles of leaves and branches need somewhere to go. Check your city's yard waste rules.
