# Caulking Concrete Joints and Cracks in Belton and KC

Those gaps between slabs in your driveway, sidewalk, or patio are expansion joints. They're there on purpose, so concrete can move with the heat and cold. But once they're open, they fill up with dirt, weeds sprout, and water gets underneath. Small cracks do the same thing. Sealing them up is one of the simplest ways to keep flat concrete looking clean. Here's what we've seen work around Belton and the Kansas City area.

## Where it helps

**Outside**

- **Driveways:** the joints between slabs and along the garage and street edges.
- **Sidewalks and walkways:** where weeds love to grow up through every gap.
- **Curbs:** the seam where the driveway or sidewalk meets the curb.
- **Patios:** joints and cracks, plus the edge where the patio meets the house.
- **Pool decks:** joints that let water and grit get under the deck.

**Inside**

- **Basement floors:** cracks and joints in a flat basement slab.

## Why seal joints and cracks

- **Keeps weeds out.** No open dirt, no place for weeds to root.
- **Keeps water out.** Less water getting under the slab and into the gap.
- **Cuts down on freeze-thaw damage.** Water that gets in and freezes can widen gaps over time. Our winters go back and forth a lot.
- **Looks cleaner.** Sealed joints give concrete a neat, finished look.

## How we do it

**1. Clean it out:** Pull weeds and grass, then dig and blow out old dirt and crumbling filler so the sealant sticks to clean concrete.

**2. Backer rod for deeper joints:** A foam rod goes in the gap so the sealant sits at the right depth and doesn't sink.

**3. Seal it:** A flexible concrete sealant goes in. It's made to stretch and squeeze as the slabs move.

**4. Let it cure:** Stay off it until it's set. Timing depends on the product and the weather.

**Best time of year:** Dry days with mild temperatures work best, so spring and fall are good. Sealant doesn't like going on wet concrete or in freezing cold.

## Common mistakes we see

- **Caulking over weeds and dirt.** It won't stick, and the weeds push right through.
- **Using rigid filler in expansion joints.** Joints need to move. Use a flexible sealant made for concrete.
- **Skipping backer rod in deep joints.** You end up using way too much sealant, and it can sink or crack.
- **Sealing wet concrete.** Wait for a dry stretch.
- **Expecting caulk to fix sunken or heaved slabs.** Sealing keeps weeds and water out. It doesn't lift or level concrete.
